The Dramatic Effect - Capturing Mood in Narrative
2.5 Day Workshop with Nico Delort
July 7, 8 & 9th, 2017

Join illustrator Nico Delort for a two and a half day weekend workshop exploring techniques, theory, and practice of creating dramatic narrative through illustration.

This workshop is perfect for illustrators that want to learn to incorporate dramatic lighting, dynamic composition, and a cinematic approach to storytelling in their narrative work. Participants will analyze what elements are necessary for creating an engaging image, discuss compelling imagery in classical works, and explore how atmosphere and lighting can affect the way we experience the story in an image. Nico will share his personal creative thoughts and techniques as he leads a series of technical demonstrations, in-studio workshops, and thoughtful conversations.

In addition to a series of hands-on ideation and workshops, Nico will provide a demonstration on how to use his medium of choice: scratchboard and ink, and participants will have an opportunity to create a work using his methods.

This weekend workshop will begin at Light Grey Art Lab on Friday evening on July 7th, kicking off with a public Artist Talk and Q&A. Seating is limited, and participants will have reserved front row seats. Afterward, all are invited to enjoy a Meet & Greet with Nico and other Twin Cities creatives.

Highlights include:
• Reserved front-row VIP seats for Nico's Artist Talk and Q&A Session
• Practice gathering engaging reference and transforming it into dynamic compositions in your work.
• Conversations on how different artists approach time, mood and perspective in their work, and learn how to determine your own voice when using them to strengthen the narratives in your work.
• Get a personal look at Nico's creative ideation and process, technical drawing methods using scratchboard and ink, and his thoughts on choosing the right moment to capture.
• Learn to focus the energy in your work by employing techniques in dramatic lighting, atmospheric perspective, and creative composition.
• Spend time discussing the nature of working in the illustration / poster industry, the ins-and-outs of the illustration field, and how Nico approaches his business and brand.

SATURDAY JULY 8th (9:30 am - 6 pm)

Starting with coffee and breakfast at Light Grey Art Lab, meet the rest of the participants and settle in for our morning workshops. Nico will introduce the intimate side of his practice, share some behind the scenes insights into what it's like working as an illustrator for alternative movie posters, the game industry, and a preview of scratchboard. We'll then dive into our first workshop, where participants can practice employing Nico's methods of creating dynamic moments in composition.

We'll take lunch along nearby Nicollet Avenue, aptly nicknamed 'Eat Street' for its wealth of excellent resturaunts, and head back to begin a workshop on the importance of reference. We'll take a trip to the Lyndale Park Rose Gardens to practice gathering real-life reference before returning to the gallery to use these materials in an in-studio exercise, and settle in for an in-studio session using Nico's storytelling techniques.

In the evening, we'll head out of the gallery for a lively dinner and Karaoke, where we can sing our heart content before calling it a night!

SUNDAY JULY 9th (9:30 am - 6 pm)

Over breakfast, Nico will lead a conversation about managing one's creative workflow and discuss how to deal with projects, time, budgets, and process, as well as how to find work that fits one's personal interests. After a break for lunch at one of Eat Street's many eateries, Nico will provide an in-depth demonstration in scratchboard and discuss his methods for approaching lighting, contrast, and texture in his work, before
participants will have the opportunity to create a work of their own using Nico's techniques with scratchboard in-studio!
Finally, we'll end the day with a discussion on social media and creating a portfolio, and Nico will weigh in on best-practices for looking to the future of one's creative life. Our final farewell dinner will be at Black Sheep Pizza, just two blocks from Light Grey Art Lab, and we'll send everyone off with a ton of new ideas and goals for the future!
