The Taste of Our Childhood
18" x 12"
About this piece:
Négerkocka, this cocoa square is one of the real classics from our childhood in Hungary. A spongy cocoa cake base with a sweet and creamy meringue and a sticky cocoa glaze on top, a sweet indulgence which is impossible to resist. I think almost everyone has a story about négerkocka in Hungary, it reminds us of our mothers and grandmothers who used to bake it for us and recalls memories of those quiet Sunday afternoons when we used to eat it at the dining table one piece after the other one.
About this artist:
I am a food photographer, food writer and trained cook based in Hungary. After living and traveling abroad for years I decided to move back to the small village where my grandmother was born and start a new project called Taste of Memories, a bilingual blog about living in the Hungarian countryside. While we are bringing new life into the 90-year-old house and orchard of 18 fruit trees I would like to rediscover and preserve traditions and old knowledge about how to live in rhythm and harmony with nature. I am in search of a lost time when there was enough time to pull out the dough for the strudel on the kitchen table, knead the bread or put fire in the garden in summer nights, telling stories or counting stars. I am cooking and baking old recipes of my half-Hungarian, half- German origins and sharing old stories, tastes which recall memories and create new ones. Food connects people regardless of age, gender, religion and this is the essence what I am looking for: connect people, bring them to a virtual table, tell stories and start conversations. My aim is to create a cozy, warm atmosphere, which gives the sense of arriving home and a virtual place to relax and switch off.
