– Dreams and the Subconscious –

MIDNIGHT features new work by eighty international illustrators, fine artists, and creatives who are bravely stepping into the realm of dreams and the subconscious. Artists create work inspired by some of their most vivid and memorable dreams as we attempt to unravel the secret undercurrents, fears, cryptic messages, and fractured narratives we experience through the thin veil of sleep. Throughout the MIDNIGHT exhibition, we welcome participants and viewers to decipher, decode, and analyze the artist's dreams.

About this piece:
When I am twelve, in spurts of fitful sleep on a sofabed, I dream that I am a blonde princess in command of a legion of bat-people. I am carried off by pirates but subject them too to my will beneath a resplendent banner. When I am twenty -- lying three anxious hours abed on my phone before sleep arrives -- I dream that I am the beleaguered second-youngest of seven sandy-haired daughters and that my body is possessed by a ruler from another dimension. I, glad to be relieved of my agency, smile as lightning transports me between universes. When I am twenty-two, vexed by the streetlights' dance on my 2 am ceiling, I dream that I am my own dark-haired self and slated to die by morning. But perhaps, if I lie awake tonight, the hangman will not find me.
