"Suffocation" by Maggie Ivy
– Dreams and the Subconscious –
MIDNIGHT features new work by eighty international illustrators, fine artists, and creatives who are bravely stepping into the realm of dreams and the subconscious. Artists create work inspired by some of their most vivid and memorable dreams as we attempt to unravel the secret undercurrents, fears, cryptic messages, and fractured narratives we experience through the thin veil of sleep. Throughout the MIDNIGHT exhibition, we welcome participants and viewers to decipher, decode, and analyze the artist's dreams.
You can view the entire collection of artwork on the exhibition gallery here.

About this piece:
I've been selected by the government to wear an accent and important mask. After a "long" journey, I am finally presented with the mask. It is a thin porcelain mask, plain in features. When I turn the mask to its underside to put on, I am shocked. The underside has grubs and maggots growing out the other side. This is how the mask stays on; it burrows into your skin, constantly squirming.
This dream is reoccurring and has had many different endings. Some nights, I just put the mask down, some nights I break it, and other nights it is forced on me. Sometimes by shadowy nondescript figures, sometimes family, and sometimes loved ones.
