About this piece:
From as early as I can remember, I have been infatuated with the concept of mermaids. As many are, I am enraptured by the lore of their beauty, their ethereal voices, and their sometimes sinister nature. The story that has always captured me the most however is the original Little Mermaid from Hans Christian Andersen. Far from its commercial counterparts, the fairytale is dark and melancholic in nature. It is even suggested that the story was written in regards to Andersen’s own unrequited gay love, which has made it all the more powerful to me. The Little Mermaid has long been a metaphor in my work and writing for both my first gay relationship and my nearly lifelong struggle against a powerful eating disorder, which I’ve often related to the sea witch. As a teenager, I clung to the story as a life raft through both times of darkness and times of hope. With its rich tones of heartache, sacrifice, faith, and the many faces of love, it is the story that I can always go back to and find a new meaning and a never-ending well of inspiration.
