About this piece:
In the heart of Iceland's landscapes is its history and the stories that have been told for hundreds of years and continue to be shared with the generation of today. This is just one story of many passed down through the Icelandic people about Reynisdranger, a rock formation of the shores of Reynisfjara Beach: One stormy night off shores of Reynisfjara Beach, three monstrous trolls were attempting to drag a three-masted ship to the nearby beach. The waves were fierce and the ocean was determined to battle their efforts to make it to shore. The trolls wails and moans of struggle rippled across the surface of the waters. Dawn was approaching and they had little time to stash their spoils and find a dark place to wait through the day. As legend had it, if the sunlight touched their bodies, they would turn to stone. Dawn approached and the trolls knew their time was fleeting. They finally made it within steps of the beach when the first beams of sunlight shot across the tops of the waters, hitting their bodies like a knife. The light spread across the shores and the trolls cried out in pain as their bodies hardened mid-hustle. It was over, the curse had caught up with them, they were now encased in a shell of stone for eternity. It is said that at night you can hear their howling moans off the shoreline, regretting their fallen day.
