"Lessons to Be Learned from Hermit Crabs" by Chase Van Weerdhuizen
– Dwellings and the Concept of Home –
TINY HOMES features eighty international illustrators and designers who, through their prints, have explored and challenged our ideas of space: Interiors, exteriors, futuristic, historical, natural or personal. Some of the artwork includes serene hideaways from which to experience the world unchanged by man, methods in which to twist our concepts of what a home can be, close-up views of dwellings where things that exist unseen by the human eye reside, and a means to reflect on what comfort means to each of us. Each and every piece is a comforting and personal vignette that serves as a reminder that there's a "home" out there for all of us.

Lessons to Be Learned from Hermit Crabs
12" x 12"
About this piece:
As a kid, I was fascinated by the hermit crabs kept by my twin cousins, who were 10 years older than me. Being able to take their pet crabs to my 1st grade show-and-tell was one of the first times I felt cool in front of my peers. Working on this piece, I reflected on a hermit crab's ability to cultivate a garden of anemones and how that compared to the medieval military desire to build impressive fortresses. The color palette for this piece was inspired by the Lisa Frank folders scattered around cousins' bedroom and the Sega Genesis game Ecco the Dolphin.
