About this piece:
Growing up, I spent a significant amount of time moving from one place to another. It felt as though I did not quite grow roots that ran deep into a tangible place, a place I could consider as “home". The work materializes my idea of the “home" I carry around with me, my own little utopia. Originating from the Greek word eu-topos, utopia means “a good place”. The Greek also have a very similar sounding word, ou-topos that means “no place”. My idea of home is not a physical space I could step into but a mental space that I keep close with me.
About this artist:
Jem explores ideas of the nature of place, of human beings in place, and of the organic and artificial structures that shape such being. Her drawings are acts of contemplation on the temporality and flux of the bustling city life that surrounds her.
