– An Iceland Residency Exhibition –
Unique, Polaroid; Polaroid Land Camera, Circa 1948
8" x 10"
About this piece:
The creatures that inhabit this earth-be they human beings or animals-are here to contribute, each in its own particular way, to the beauty and prosperity of the world.” ~ Dalai Lama
My inspiration comes from a wide range of places, including but not limited to Vogue magazine, People magazine, reality TV, John Szarkowski, Joan Rivers, Dolly Parton, Steve Martin, Diane Arbus, Mad Men, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Best In Show, Woody Allen and Golden Gate Park at dawn. I draw my color pallet from Dutch Renaissance painters, Gerard Dou, Rogier Van Der Weyden and Johannes Vermeer.
IN my commercial work, I use a high end digital camera. I do loads of editing on my computer using a number of adobe products, always being sure to have the latest and greatest version. This gives me total control over every aspect of the final product.
Iceland brings out a whole different set of concerns. The landscape seems to freeze time in such a particular way. Are we seeing the earth 50 billion years ago? 100 years ago? 10? With time acting so differently, it only made sense to use a Polaroid Land Camera Circa 1948, with a film that is nearly impossible to get ones hands on, and results that can utterly unpredictable and very often uncontrollable. I’m fascinated that I am taking a picture in 2018 that could very well be identical to one taken 70 years ago.
