The New North
– Contemporary Art from the Upper Midwest –

There’s an austere but inviting sense of minimalism that thrives in Minnesota. Maybe it’s the Scandinavian influence or the landscape of white blankets on chilly winter nights, but an understated and graceful aesthetic tends to show up in the art, crafts, and products produced by local creatives. The New North: Contemporary Art from the Upper Midwest is an exhibit of art and craft created by creators from the region. The New North is curated by Mary Jo Hoffman and features a dozen artists across multiple disciplines including screenprinting, photography, ceramic, woodworking, and painting. The exhibition is on display May 5th - May 20th, 2017.

You can view the gallery and archive of artwork here.

About this collection:

I am a painter working in encaustic, a painting method dating back to ancient Greece. Encaustic is a pigmented combination of molten beeswax and resin, each layer applied and fused to the previous layer with a heat source. The translucent wax allows earlier layers to remain visible after later layers are applied and allows me to capture and order the sometimes random-seeming thoughts, ideas, and images that fill my musings between the events of everyday life.

I’m inspired by images encountered, rather than sought, - things that capture my attention - or as I like to think - ask for my consideration. Words, music, color, shadow, shape and texture are linked together in my mind and are translated to visual abstract from a vantage point that is present but slightly removed or disengaged. I paint in a manner adds and subtracts, building and scraping back the surface to create a visual and tactile sense of space and depth. This “push/pull” of creating and removing seems to reflect my own need for solitude amid complexity.

About this artist:

Kristin has explored a wide range of art mediums, taking classes locally at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and in Tennessee, at the Appalachian Center for Crafts and the Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. At a gallery in Texas, she was intrigued by a textured painting of spoons painted with encaustic. Several years later, upon returning to the Twin Cities in 2007, she began taking classes with Jeff Hirst, a prominent encaustic artist. In 2015, Kristin completed the two-year WARM Mentor Program working with artist Farida Hughes. Kristin has participated in several group and juried exhibitions in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She currently lives in the Twin Cities.
