"Comfort In the Dirt" by Scott Southall
– Hiding in Plain Sight –
Camouflage features seventy international illustrators and designers who are pulling off the veil on the concept of what it means to be invisible. Artists created work exploring the concepts of blending in, assimilating, and adapting to their surroundings. Whatever the reason, we're constantly in hiding in one way or another. The art of camouflage spans the political, aesthetic, scientific, magical, psychological and social realms. The Camouflage Exhibition is on display May 26th - July 14th, 2017.

About this piece:
She just wants to be outside, by the river. There is dirt on her clothes, and callouses on her hands from climbing trees. She bothers spiders who mind their own business and is unbothered by the raindrops that ride down on the breeze. Anxiety is built on the backs of awkward conversations, break ups, and avoiding contact with eyes full of questions. But it's quiet when she hides outside in fields, and the dirt on her back tucks her in for the comeliest of sleep.
About this artist:
Scott Southall has lived in the same city all his life, and as such has built up close relationships with his friends who regularly become the subjects of his intimate portraits. Washed in youthful abandon his photographs depict candid moments talking, joking, and adventuring around Columbia, SC. This narrative style allows him to reimagine his everyday life and invites the viewer to enter this otherwise hidden world through the lens of his SX-70.
