A Gown of Moss
Original Artwork
Watercolor, gouache, pencil
6” x 8"

About this piece:

Rich and unusual gowns are not uncommon in fairytales but viewed through the lens of country and culture their shapes and details have to shift. The short human history of Iceland is revealed in how their fairytales are tied to and unsettled by the landscape, so it made sense that the dresses worn to the heroine would be influenced not only by historical costume but also by the beauty in which the raw rocks are clothed. In the second of the four illustrations, therefore, the heroine wears a dress of moss and lichen.
